It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to a dear colleague and friend, Dr. Daniel Stewart. We mourn his passing and give thanks for the many lives he touched over the years and will be forever grateful for the imprint he left on reproductive medicine. We extend our sincerest condolences to his family. What follows is his obituary, as seen in the Kansas City Star.
Dan left this world on May 29, 2013. As the founder of the Reproductive Medicine & Infertility Department at Shawnee Mission Medical Center, he helped create many new lives and happy families. He will be fondly remembered and sorely missed by so many that he touched during his lifetime.
Born April 6, 1961, in Topeka, Kansas, he graduated from Topeka High School in 1979 and Washburn University in 1983. From there, he at- tended the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine, graduating in 1987 and completed his residency in Obstetrics/Gynecology at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas, where he met his wife of 23 years, Cindy. Together they spent two years in Baltimore, Maryland, where Dan completed a Fellowship in Reproductive Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital. They returned to Kansas City where he helped establish a reproductive program at the University of Kansas Medical Center as Assistant Professor, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology. His first successful “creation” was in June, 1994, amid much celebration!
After five years, he joined Shawnee Mission Medical Center and founded the Reproductive Medicine & Infertility Department where he spent the remainder of his life. Named a Kansas City Super Doctor in 2006, 2008, and 2010, Dr. Stewart was nationally renowned in his field of expertise and invited to lecture at many seminars and other events. He always held himself to the highest standards of his chosen profession and would accept no less from others. Sharing his knowledge and experience in reproductive medicine with others was an important part of his life. Dan gave unselfishly and never expected anything in return. In his spare time, he could be found riding around on his John Deere tractor on rural property where he hoped to live eventually.
Besides his wife Cindy, survivors include his father, Lou Stewart, his mother and step-father Pat and Don Richardson, sister Debra Stewart, sister Lisa Stewart and husband Mark Works, and two nieces Alanna and Margeaux Seymour, all of Topeka. In addition, he was truly loved by his in-laws Elaine VanDeventer and husband Rick Zarley, Baldwin City, KS, Bob and Pam VanDeventer, Andover, KS, Bill and Cathy VanDeventer, Arlene VanDeventer, all of Wichita, KS, and nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews, some of whom he helped create.
A celebration of his life will be held on June 15, 2013, at Shawnee Mission Medical Center’s Chapel and adjoining atrium, beginning at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, Cindy requests donations to The Foundation for Shawnee Mission Medical Center as a memorial in Dan’s name to benefit the on-going development of the new Birth Center.
