Fertility Clinics Offer Accurate, Precise & Specific Infertility Diagnosis
Fertility clinics play a vital role in the diagnosis and treatment of infertility issues. They are highly specialized medical centers that offer detailed and specific diagnostic tests. Fertility specialists are to OBs what OBs are to General Practitioners. We’ve had all the same training – and then we continued on to receive education, licensing and certifications that are specific to reproductive endocrinology (the study of endocrine glands and hormones) as well as the whole reproductive system.
So, in addition to our MD licensing and a 4 year residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology, fertility specialists have board-certified fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. We are OB/GYNs and infertility specialists. This allows us to get to the heart of matter quicker and more precisely than an OB/GYN can, especially if you have a more complicated or a combined infertility diagnosis. This in itself can save patients time and money.
While a good OB/GYN can often diagnose endometriosis or PCOS, there are more specialized diagnoses, like uterine septum, more complicated endometriosis, atypical PCOS, or specific sperm factors.
For example, the male-half of your partnership may have been given the “all clear” from his general practitioner in terms of sperm count. But the typical lab tech doesn’t have the skill set to identify things like poor sperm motility (movement) or morphology (shape). Or, a woman may not display the more tell-tale physical symptoms of PCOS such as excess weight or male-pattern hair thinning, which prevents her diagnosis from coming to light in her OB’s office.
When you consult with a fertility clinic, we:
- Evaluate all of your medical records
- Fill in gaps in family and medical history
- Run specific, diagnostic tests
- Create a customized fertility plan dependent on your diagnosis.
Since time is of the essence in many cases, especially in those where the woman is 35-years or older, we recommend contacting a fertility clinic to check-in when fertility seems to be an issue.
