National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW) is just around the corner. This is a big week for those of us who work in the endocrinology and fertility treatment fields, as well as for our patients and anyone who’s gone through the infertility journey.
In addition to helping us raise awareness about infertility and the need for more fertility treatment coverage and support, NIAW is a beautiful way to connect with others who’ve walked the same path and who can provide the invaluable support of knowing that you are not alone!
April 21-27: NIAW Empowering You to Change the Conversation
Empowering YOU to Change the Conversation is the theme of this year’s National Infertility Awareness Week. To get started, we recommend checking out the NIAW Calendar of upcoming events, many of which take place via online Live forums.
Other ways to get involved include:
Get Chatty about NIAW on Social Media
The NIAW planners know that not everyone likes talking about their infertility or the struggles experienced along the way. However, social media channels are by far the most powerful way to get the word out and help others understand just how common infertility is (one in eight couples struggle to get pregnant!).
Click Here for ideas and prompts on how to get active on social media and spread the word.
Host or Participate in a RESOLVE Fundraiser
RESOLVE is a non-profit organization that has done amazing work supporting women, men, and their partners in navigating the fertility treatment path. They have so many creative ideas on how you can help raise funds for their noble cause OR attend an event (both in-person and virtual) to show your support.
Participate in the Proclamation Project
If sharing on social media or hosting/attending fundraisers isn’t your thing, maybe you’d like to participate in their Proclamation Project. A proclamation is a public or official announcement issued by a Governor, Mayor, and/or City Council member to commemorate a specific period (day, week, or month) to raise awareness about local efforts. (Example: National Infertility Awareness Week is designated for April).
Proclamations help increase public awareness about a specific issue. Having an elected official, like a mayor or town supervisor, who is in a leadership position show support for the proclamation helps validate one of the goals of National Infertility Awareness Week—changing the conversation around infertility and family building. Consider getting involved if your local or state government isn’t on their Proclamation list.
Take Advantage of the Support You Deserve
There are many different ways to get involved in NIAW, from hosting and attending events to sharing on social media to wearing NIAW-themed gear. However, one of the best things about getting involved is connecting with others who understand what you’re going through.
Honoring yourself by seeking high-quality infertility support can be life-changing. We recommend visiting the NIAW Stories Page, as we know you’ll connect with many of the stories, feelings, and perspectives shared there. Who knows? You might even decide to share your own story. You can also look for infertility support groups online and in your community.
